World Cup: Group K Preview

The Colonial · June 14, 2026

DR Congo – Les Léopards took the long way back to the World Cup after a 52-year wait. They beat Nigeria on penalties in the last round of African qualifying and earned a spot in the intercontinental playoffs. There, they beat Jamaica 1-0 thanks to an Axel Tuanzebe goal in extra time in the 100th minute. They’ve come a long way over the last 15 years. Over that span, their FIFA ranking has jumped from 133rd to 46th. Be prepared for the loudest roar you’ve ever heard when they get their first goal of the tournament; they’ve never scored at a World Cup. They’re set up well to get that dreamed-of goal as well as advance to the knockouts. Sunderland workhorse Noah Sadiki will be an important player for them as well as Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa.

Portugal – Cristiano Ronaldo returns to the World Cup one last time and his supporting cast is incredible. Portugal boasts the best midfield in the world with Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, and João Neves. The defense behind them is no joke either with guys like Manchester City’s Ruben Dias and PSG’s Nuno Mendes. There’s a reason Portugal is ranked 5th in the world. My only worry for Portugal is the front line and its ability to help contribute off the ball and go deep into games. Only so much pressing can be asked of a 41-year-old striker and the strikers behind him aren’t in the best form. Additionally, most of their wingers aren’t known for being efficient pressers. If they can find the right balance, their squad is as good as any. Look for Francisco Conceição to be an important player for Portugal if they end up going deep in the tournament.

Uzbekistan – After some painful close calls in qualifying, Uzbekistan makes its first appearance at the World Cup. The White Wolves have steadily climbed to 50th in the FIFA rankings, nearly 30 spots higher than where they were in 2022. The big question around them is the quality of opposition. Uzbekistan haven’t played against top opposition. Their only eye-catching result was their 2-0 win over Egypt in November. That said, their rawness in this level of competition suggests that they’ll be fearless. Eldor Shomourodov will be the one to watch in the attack. He bagged 22 goals in the Turkish league last season with Başakşehir. The defense will be led by Manchester City’s young center back Abdukodir Khusanov.

Colombia – Los Cafeteros enter this tournament as a serious dark horse contender. After coming within touching distance of glory at the 2024 Copa America, the Colombians will and should see themselves as a legitimate dark horse contender. They had some defensive struggles in qualifying but also scored more goals than any other South American team not named Argentina. James Rodríguez, the 2024 Copa America Player of the Tournament, is still pulling the strings at 34 years old. His brilliance along with the individual quality of guys like Luis Díaz and Jhon Arias will need to shine in order to produce a team run. Keep an eye on Sporting Lisbon striker Luis Suárez. He’s bagged 30 goals in back-to-back seasons including five goals in the Champions League last season. He could show flashes of the Uruguayan Luis Suárez with the talent he’s got.
