World Cup: Group H Preview
Uruguay – La Celeste have a glittering record in the World Cup. They won the inaugural World Cup in 1930 and then won again in 1950. They have consistently performed on the world stage and in South America with 15 Copa America titles. The last World Cup was a huge disappointment as they bowed out in the group stage. Now, they’ll be looking for redemption as they enter a new phase of life without the greatness of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani. Darwin Núñez could be the man who steps into the spotlight after a season in the shadows in the Saudi Pro League. The national team has brought the best out of him in the past. Overall, Uruguay should feel very confident to take a top two spot here. Their biggest strength is probably the level of experience in the team. Guys like De Arrascaeta, Valverde, and Muslera have been key pillars in the team for a long time and know how to win.

Cape Verde – Ranked 69th in the world currently, Cape Verde came out of nowhere to take the top spot over 45th ranked Cameroon in their qualifying group. The Blue Sharks pumped out seven wins in ten games to clinch their first World Cup appearance. This team is balling out with house money; they even found one of their center backs through LinkedIn. Dailon Livramento was the hero in qualifying with five goals including the winner in a 1-0 win over Cameroon. Right back Wagner Pina is coming off a great season in the Turkish Super Lig with seven assists. He’ll be looking to use his pace and delivery to make some magic for his country.

Spain – La Roja enter the tournament as one of the biggest favorites and will be keen to add a second star to their logo. This team is star-studded with no star brighter than teenage phenom Lamine Yamal. The young winger is coming off a La Liga season where he had 27 goal contributions in just 28 matches played. He’s ridiculous and has so much talent around him. This squad has an embarrassment of riches at every position which goes to show why they’re the reigning European champions and haven’t lost since March of 2024. Watch out for Nico Williams; he was a focal point at the Euros in 2024 but had a very underwhelming season for Bilbao. The World Cup could be his moment to seize the spotlight again as defenses swarm around Yamal.

Saudi Arabia – The Green Falcons pulled off a shocker in the 2022 World Cup when they beat Messi and Argentina in the group stage. While they didn’t progress in the tournament, it put everyone on lookout. Say what you will about the Saudi Pro League, the football development in the country has soared over the last few years. Still, they’re outgunned in this group but can advance if they can nip a win off Cape Verde or pull a shocker on a big boy again. Mohammed Abu Al Shamat is a rising star worth keeping an eye on. He had 8 assists in the Saudi Pro League this season and can play in the defense and the midfield. Just like four years ago, expect veteran Salem Al-Dawsari to pop up in the big moments as well.
