Thanks Table: Gratitude from 1 to 20
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Whether your club is first or twentieth, we're all grateful for at least one player, one moment, or the fact that we have any points at all. Here's why I think each club should be thankful today. Panic is back on the menu tomorrow.
1. Arsenal — Eberechi Eze
The Gunners' new man is on fire since finding his place in the team. Four goals and two assists including a North London derby hat trick have made him an instant hero. His emergence has kept Arsenal on track after injuries to Martin Ødegaard and Viktor Gyökeres. He looks just like the X-factor Arsenal needs.
2. Chelsea — Moises Caicedo
Chelsea's constant rotation made consistency hard to come by last season. The rotation hasn't slowed down too much but having the most in-form defensive midfielder in the world as your engine really boosts consistency. Caicedo is living up to his $100 million price tag and is the Blues' focal point.
3. Manchester City — Erling Haaland
14 goals from 12 Premier League matches. He's a battering ram of production.
4. Aston Villa — Emiliano Buendía
Villa were limited by PSR this summer. They didn't get to make the signings they wanted to and even had to let a starlet go, young Jacob Ramsey. Fortunately for them, Emiliano Buendía has burst back onto the scene like a new signing. After injury woe and pecking order gloom, he's making a real impact at Villa Park with 3 goals and 2 assists in under 500 minutes played.
5. Crystal Palace — Keeping Marc Guehi
Crystal Palace looked in danger of losing their identity in August. Eze was gone and Guehi has one foot out the door. Guehi's move was blocked and he and Palace haven't looked back. They're on course for their best league season in the Premier League era. Glasner's stand to keep his man is paying off. The club chose performance over money but will likely get the choice again soon.
6. Brighton & Hove Albion — Welbeck's Fountain of Youth
The recent birthday boy Danny Welbeck turned 35 while having scored 5 goals form his last 5 Premier League matches. He's in the form of his life and looks poised to smash his best Premier League season goals total that he set just last season. He's the gift that keeps on giving for the Gulls.
7. Sunderland — Granit Xhaka
Xhaka might be the signing of the summer. His identity is all over this Sunderland team and you can see why his former club became “Neverlusen.” From stripped captain to certified winner, it's the best redemption arc we've witnessed in a while.
8. AFC Bournemouth — Antoine Semenyo
Selling your whole defense and one of your best forwards usually isn't advisable but the Cherries don't care. They've retained their form and Semenyo has given them a killer edge. With 6 goals and 3 assists so far, he looks like a potential finalist for Player of the Year.
9. Tottenham Hotspur — Away games
Spurs have earned 13 points on the road and 5 at home. They're riding the line between improvement and crisis. Without their stunning away form, they'd probably be in the same position as last season. They need to turn it around in a hurry but wins at the Ethiad and the Hill-Dickinson look priceless right now.
10. Manchester United — Big foreheads
The Red Devils have shown flashes of new beginnings this season. A shocking loss to 10-man Everton on Monday showed how quickly trepidation can return. Big headers from their center backs have kept them in a respectable position. Maguire's winner against Liverpool and De Ligt's late equalizer against Spurs were crucial moments. Without those goals, they'd be closer to the relegation zone than the top four.
11. Everton — Hill Dickinson Stadium
Everton build a new stadium and climb above Liverpool in the table? That can't be a coincidence, right? They might need to build a new one every year at this rate. Jokes aside, the Toffees new home is becoming a fortress and a fulcrum for a shift in Everton's identity.
12. Liverpool — Dominik Szoboszlai
Where would Liverpool be with Dominik Szoboszlai? I doubt Arne Slot would still have his job without the Hungarian. He's the only Liverpool player holding a world-class standard this year. Without his free kick against Arsenal and his dummy on Ngumoha's winner at Newcastle, the relegation battle jokes surrounding Liverpool would be all too real.
13. Brentford — Long throws
The Bees scored 5 goals from long throws last season and have 3 already this season. It's become a serious wild card for them to play. It's one of the many weapons they've used to silence the doubters this season.
14. Newcastle United — Squad depth
This season hasn't started how Eddie Howe's side hoped. They're still searching for consistency, but their depth has kept their heads above water. The Magpies have been able to rotate to keep fresh legs and have gotten contributions from lots of sources. Despite struggling to find their feet, Newcastle are still within striking distance of European spots, doing well enough in the UCL, and are in the EFL Cup quarter finals.
15. Fulham — Ryan Sessegnon
The last month or two has been dark for Fulham. Picking up a win over Sunderland at Craven Cottage was huge for them last weekend. Sessegnon has been an underrated bright spot in their season. He's pitched in with two goals and shown why he was such a big prospect when he first emerged. His form might require that Marco Silva works him into the team even when Antonee Robinson returns.
16. Nottingham Forest — Elliot Anderson
This one has to be Elliot Anderson for me. Forest have been through huge highs and lows this season, but he's been consistent through it all. He's worth every penny they paid for him last summer and more. His establishment as a big piece in Tuchel's England side says it all.
17. West Ham United — Evangelos Marinakis
The Hammers were in crisis from the start of the season when they were spanked by Sunderland. A new manager at the London Stadium was inevitable. The fact that they've been able to get a manager of Espíritu Santo's quality boils down to a bad choice by a rival owner. They'll be thanking him as much as Nuno.
18. Leeds United — The approaching transfer window
Things started so well for Leeds but they've faded fast. Farke's ability to get it done in the top flight is being investigated and the squad looks like it needs reinforcements. I don't think this squad can survive but a new player or two in January could turn the tide for them.
19. Burnley — Jaidon Anthony
The winger's production has tailed off recently but his start to the season offers some hope. He scored four goals before October and has been a significant creative source for the Clarets. They'll need more flurries of form from him but the one they've gotten was crucial.
20. Wolverhampton Wanderers — The EFL Cup
Wolves are no longer in the EFL Cup but it's the only place where they've had success so far. They beat West Ham and Everton before losing to Chelsea rather valiantly. Those performances give them something to latch onto even if not much. This team isn't far from searching from “How do I use voodoo to win?” or “Are miracles real?”.
